PDF Controller required for Extreme?

Maybe it's just me. I'm an avid rhythm gamer, I've been playing Bemani since it was released back in the 90's but after seeing (and trying) a few Extreme songs, my fingers cannot mash the button fast enough to even pass it. Granted I am a new player (I just started by downloading the demo on PS3) but it makes me imagine that the controller is almost required for the Extreme songs. Of course I've never been able to beat 9 button songs on Pop'n Music until I imported the controller and I've seen people do it on YouTube with a Dual Shock...absolutely amazing.
