How Do I Go About Placing Notes in an Edit??

I'm new to trying to make completed edits, even though I've started quite a few in the past.
I can place fun to play rhythms that fit the song on the timeline no problem, but run into problems in trying to place them so that they do not look cluttered and hard to read.

Does anyone have reccomendations or general tips/advice on placing the note positions on the screen?
Because all I know about it is to be careful to avoid having notes fly in from the close side...
All of the edit making tutorials I found are more focused on the basic functions and how to navigate the many menus in edit mode.

As a note:
I dislike the automatic positioning edit mode offers as those patterns seem to get visually boring so quickly.
